Public Teachings and Empowerments

TA KHYAG KHYUNG SUM and GESAR

Hong Kong, 21-22 August 2010

TA KHYAG KHYUNG SUM

Jigme Tromge Rinpoche will offer empowerment and teachings for the extensive and the short daily practices of the Ta Khyag Khyung Sum, a sadhana of the three wrathful deities Hayagriva, Vajrapani and the Wisdom Garuda.

Among the many tantric cycles of Hayagriva practice, this one is particularly designated for degenerating times. Now as kingly demons, earth spirits and nagas are getting stronger, we can observe how beings’ afflictive emotions are increasingly powerful, and how virtue is becoming depleted. Guru Rinpoche, who is none other than Hayagriva, excerpted the Ta Khyag Khyung Sum practice from “The Black Volume Known As ‘Taming the Nagas’” and bestowed it upon Yeshe Tsogyal and King Trisong Detsen. The text was concealed, and in the 19th century was revealed by the great Dudjom Lingpa. It is regarded as supremely effective in dispelling obstacles on all levels.

In the root text, Guru Rinpoche clearly prophesied the signs of degeneration that would arise as the dynamic energy of the five poisons increased. He said that noble families would become ordinary while ordinary beings would become powerful and high. The innocent would be punished; the guilty praised, and seated on high thrones. Dharma or spiritual practitioners would be despised, while those who committed non-virtue would be honored. Negative beings and especially nagas and nyen spirits would run rampant and spread all kinds of new diseases.

Hayagriva practice functions to remove any kind of sickness in general, and to purify bodily obscurations. Being empowered by Vajrapani helps eliminate the negativities of the three classes of dons (obstructors) – the male king demons, the female demonesses, and the naga spirits of the earth. All arrogant ones of the eight classes are tamed. Finally, Wisdom Garuda practice works to spontaneously accomplish wrathful activities, and tame various kinds of nagas. With proper motivation to bring benefit to all beings, the fearsome power of these three deities can be harnessed to great effect.

The significance of this practice today is its power to help resolve the plethora of physical sickness and emotional disturbances we are experiencing, as well as to remove obstructions to the attainment of realization.

GESAR

Gesar is the legendary warrior king of 12th century Tibet who lives on in dharma and folklore traditions all over Tibet and now beyond. Arising from great compassion, he remains to bring benefit in peaceful and wrathful ways. Gesar practice is very appropriate for these times when – as predicted in the scriptures -- non-virtue is so prevalent, and beings destroy their own merit through greed and negative emotions. Mipham Rinpoche, the great 19th century Nyingma scholar-practitioner, had a strong connection with Gesar, rich in blessings, and wrote this particular text based on a terma by Dechhen Rolpa Tzal.

Gesar arose in the form of a warrior king so as to tame both the negative forces among humans and also those of non-humans. His peaceful aspect is in essence the compassionate Chenrezig, and his wrathful aspect is in essence Hayagriva, tamer of negativities and maras.

Gesar practice involves dealing with the elements, and so helps to harmonize the physical environment and spirits. Elemental disturbances are quelled and harm-doers brought back onto the path of goodness. As a wish-fulfilling gem, Gesar also has the quality of wealth – which, if handled with wisdom and pure intention, can help bring ever greater benefit to others,.

Tibetans often talk of ‘raising windhorse’, for which Gesar, along with the might of the drala and werma, is extremely significant. Whatever aspects of one’s own life-force have been scattered can swiftly be gathered back through his practice. We can become newly invigorated and uplifted, better able to face both mundane and spiritual challenges with strength and compassion.
