Programs at PPI

The intention of our founder Jigme Rinpoche and his late father Chagdud Rinpoche was that the Padmasambhava Peace Institute should develop meaningful connections with both local communities and those further afield, and should bring benefit to as many people as possible. The diversity of the groups who have spent time at the Institute reflect this intention, and the beauty and serenity of Black Mountain Preserve has proved the perfect setting for all kinds of events.

Programs held at the Padmasambhava Peace Institute so far include:

    • forest-based work parties for at-risk youth, in collaboration with the local volunteer fire-fighters
    • cultural and educational programs for native American children
    • training program run by college humanities faculty
    • children's summer camps focusing on environmental education
    • environmental activism training, with special emphasis on permaculture
    • weekend and multi-day Buddhist retreats led by Tibetan Buddhist masters
    • public teachings on Buddhist philosophy and practice
    • holistic nurses' retreat and accredited workshops
    • natural building projects
Our facilities can host up to 80 people overnight, and more for day events, while smaller groups of up to 16 can still enjoy the privacy of the self-contained 'main house'. For more information and pictures of the PPI site, please see our related website www.blackmountaincenter.com .

Curriculum as presented in the

Padmasambhava Peace Institute's Development Plan

Among classes offered will be:

- Peaceful conflict resolution and life-skills training for at-risk youth and adults

- Education on land stewardship, conserving and maintaining natural habitats, organic farming and programs designed for human and environmental preservation and restoration

- Non-violent living programs in yoga, health and stress reduction

- Teachings and presentations on diverse cultures, arts and philosophy

All PPI programs are based on the Buddhist principles of kindness of heart and interdependency of life on earth.

In our educational institute, professionals with diverse language skills and backgrounds will bring their knowledge and experience to the classrom.

We will have staff with medical backgrounds, therapists and artists to serve as instructors and assistants with our programs.

Our goal is in-depth studies, compassion, art, philosphy, language and ecological responsibility. The Black Mountain Preserve creates an ideal atmosphere in which to offer these programs.
